5 Tips to help you battle addiction

Battle addictionNobody is perfect and we all make mistakes at some point in our life.  The problem is that some mistakes are harder to correct than others, especially if they have developed into a bad habit.  Whether it is gambling, cigarettes, alcohol or an addiction to drugs, if it is starting to control your life, then it is time to look for a solution.

These are the first five steps to overcoming an addiction before it overtakes you!

1)    Admit that you have a problem.  The first step in any attempt at overcoming an addiction is admitting that you have a problem and that you need help.  Most people try to hide their bad habits, because they are afraid of being judged for it.  Most of the time, you also don’t want to admit that it is an issue, because you are still convince yourself that you are still in control.

2)    Try to regain control before you hit rock bottom, if possible.  As you realize that your addiction is taking over your life, immediately start taking steps to regain your control.  You may not be able to fight the urge on your own, but try to limit how often you cave.  For example, if your addiction to gambling is getting out of control, put limits on it and don’t put yourself in situations where you will be tempted.

3)    Replacing old bad habits with new ones is tough, but it will help you overcome your addiction.  There were two replacement tricks that I used when I quit smoking.  The first was chewing gum while I drove and the other trick was my afternoon “apple break.”  Remember, that it is more than just replacing the bad habit that started it, but it also means adjusting any habits that go along with it.  For example, many smokers associate having a cigarette with their morning coffee.  Try eating a healthy breakfast with your coffee instead, which most adults neglect.

4)    Make sure that you have a strong support system that you can turn to when temptation creeps in.  Your family and friends care about you and they want to see you get better.  Often addicts will turn against the people who love them because they are ashamed or embarrassment to admit they need help.  Battling an addiction will be considerably easier if you have someone on your side to help your through it.

5)    If you have tried everything you can to break the addiction on your own without any improvement, then there is nothing wrong with seeking professional help.  Drugs, alcohol, gambling and other addictive habits are not easily changed.  It takes more the willpower and there are professionals available who can put you on the right path to success.

The most important thing if you have an addiction is to recognize it and seek help.  The longer you wait to deal with your problem, the harder it will be to stop.  Don’t beat yourself up for falling victim to an addiction.  It happens to even the strongest people.  Use it to test your own personal strength and break free from the shackles that your addiction has placed on your life.
