It is the one subject that we all want to forget till it hits us in the eye. We are too busy with our lives that we don’t realize that what we will see when we get old, is the result of what we do at the present. Muscles, bones and joints – age related:

When we get old it is unavoidable to have grey hair and wrinkles. But when it comes to muscles, bones and joints- inactivity is the major cause for ageing.

A bed-ridden older person can lose around five per cent of their muscle strength for each day of their time in bed. If someone is not feeling steady on their feet or feeling weak might stay away from exercise and this leads to continuous physical decline.

Muscle looses size and strength as we get older, which leads to fatigue, weakness and reduced tolerance to exercise; when we age the structure of our bone changes and it might result in loss of bone tissue and when the bone is low in mass it can easily break due to sudden bump or fall; the amount of lubricating fluid inside the joints decreases due to ageing and the cartilage becomes thin, this cause the joint movement to become stiff and less flexible.

Nearly half of all Australians over the age of 75 years have some kind of disability.

Many of the age-related changes to joints are caused by lack of exercise. Movement of the joint helps keep the fluid moving. Being inactive causes the cartilage to shrink and stiffen, reducing joint mobility.

Exercise can even reverse these changes. It’s never too late to start living an active lifestyle
