Why we should Avoid Packaged and Processed Foods

why we should avoid packaged and processed foodsIn the fast-paced world we live in, most people rely on quick and easy packaged and processed foods for at least one meal during the week. People are convinced it is easier to cook instant noodle side-dishes or pre-made frozen meals than it is to prepare something fresh. These choices may be slightly more convenient, but they are also the cause of many common health problems.

Our bodies were not designed to digest most of the additives and preservatives found in packaged and processed foods. These chemicals are used to alter the natural taste, appearance, texture, and colour, as well as preserving the food so that it lasts longer than it should. Many of the popular additives have numerous side effects like digestive issues and weight gain that can have a negative impact on how you feel.

For example, high corn syrup fructose has been linked to an increased risk for type-2 diabetes, cancer, coronary heart disease, and stroke, plus it is not easily metabolized by the liver. Foods that contain artificial colors or flavors have been linked to hyperactivity, juvenile diabetes, and obesity in children. These are only some of the side effects.

Most of the chemicals in packaged and processed foods are made from petroleum derivatives and acetone. The long-term damage caused by these chemicals has yet to be proven, but people that are concerned with their diet and overall health should avoid artificial dyes, colors, flavors, preservatives and sweeteners as much as possible.

This especially true if you are trying to lose weight. Many studies have proven that people who eat mostly natural foods like vegetables, fruits, lean meats and whole grains lost more weight than those who relied heavily on processed or packaged foods. The high fibre content in produce and whole grains allow food to be digested slower, so it doesn’t affect your blood sugar level as drastically as refined foods. Your body will also burn more calories digesting whole foods, which will make it easier for you to reach your weight loss goals.

Refined or processed foods are normally higher in sugar, sodium, and fat than their organic alternatives. People who choose to eat whole foods are physically and mentally healthier, because they ingest more natural vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Eating organic or raw foods has also been proven to reduce the risk of many terrible illnesses like diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Whole foods are rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties that will actually strengthen your immune system.

Stick to foods that are as natural as possible. Processed and packaged foods make your body work harder to digest them and flush out the toxins. In particular, processed meat requires substantial chemical processing which results in a product that is almost unrecognisable from its original state. Eating processed meat has been proven to increase your risk of several cancers of the stomach and internal organs.

Processed and packaged foods are usually quick and convenient, but the drawbacks significantly outweigh the advantages. They can lead to serious illnesses like obesity, diabetes, and even cancer. It only takes a couple extra minutes to prepare natural and fresh foods. Your body and health will be better because of it.
