Why it is Better to Just Avoid Refined FoodsOur fast-paced society relies too heavily on convenient and simple meal choices that don’t provide the nutrients needed for optimal health. Cancer, heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and many other nutrition-related illnesses are on the rise because most Americans consume a diet filled with mostly refined and processed foods.

Unfortunately, if you are living off a diet of refined foods and not taking a daily multi-vitamin, you are not getting the nourishment your body needs to stay healthy. Instead you are just filling it with empty calories and dangerous chemicals that will end up doing more harm than good.

Dangers of Refined and Processed Foods

Refined foods are often high in fat, salt, and sugar, which are all major contributors to the obesity epidemic. Refined sugar is very dangerous, especially when it is combined with fast acting carbohydrates. It can cause a dangerous diabetic reaction because the combination will make your sugar levels jump drastically.

Most processed foods have an excessive amount of carbohydrates and almost no protein. This will raise glucose levels and result in fast weight gain. It will also raise your blood pressure due to the high fat and salt content. High blood pressure will increase your risk of hypertension, stroke, kidney disease, and heart disease.

Many refined and processed foods also contain trans-fat. This is a leading contributor to rising cholesterol levels and increased cases of heart disease. These toxic foods also contain carcinogenic properties that have been linked to several different types of cancer.

The Real Ingredients in Refined Foods

Sadly there are not many “real” ingredients in most refined foods, which is why you are better off avoiding them altogether. You can identify refined or processed foods by reading the label. If the bag, box, can, or jar that lists a bunch of words you can hardly pronounce, then there is a good chance there was lots of processing involved.

Oil, salt, sugar, and flour are all processed, so they lack any real nutrients. Instead they are filled with artificial vitamins, food additives, and unknown fillers. They use chemicals to artificially alter the consistency, taste, color, and shelf-life.

Real food comes from the earth. If you are not eating enough vegetables and fruit, then you should at least be taking some type of natural multi-vitamin to compensate for the nutrients that are lacking in your diet. The only way to truly achieve optimal health is through proper nutrition and you won’t receive any nutrition from refined foods.
