To Breastfeed, Or Use Formula; That Is The Question!

To Breastfeed, Or Use Formula; That Is The Question! This is a question that many expectant mothers or those that have just given birth ponder. In this post, we shall delve into the many aspects that should be considered before a decision is made either in favor of breastfeeding or in favor of formula.

Why Should You Breastfeed?

There are many arguments that make breastfeeding the default way to feed your newborn. While in the womb, a fetus depends on the mother for everything, including antibodies. That first milk that the mother produces, called colostrum, is rich in antibodies and they help the baby fight off diseases and infections while it develops its own antibodies. It is for this reason that mothers are encouraged to breastfeed their newborns, at least for a few days.

Hormones released as you breastfeed help your uterus to contract to its size before you became pregnant and your weight will quickly return to what it was before the pregnancy.

Breastfeeding is also devoid of the rigors that using formula demands such as ensuring the formula is at a certain precise temperature when you give it to the baby, issues of constantly sterilizing the items you use for feeding the baby, and so on. Did I also mention that breast milk is free?

In short, breast milk has all that a baby needs, at least for the first six months of its life.

Should Those Feeding Babies On Formula Feel Guilty?

Not necessarily. Many factors make the option of baby formula the only choice for many new mothers. One strong reason is that those who have certain diseases, such as AIDS, are expressly told to avoid breastfeeding as that could adversely affect their newborn baby. The same applies to new mothers that are on certain medications that pose a risk to the baby.

At another level is the new mother whose work schedule cannot allow her to breastfeed. There are also those that try as they may, breastfeeding just fails to work for them. It all boils down to what conditions are prevailing for each new mother.

There shouldn’t be any shame or guilt when you go the baby formula way. Breastfeeding is the ideal, but we do not live in an ideal world so, to each their own!

Whether you choose to breastfeed or use baby formula, you need to know that you have special nutritional needs to enable you cope with the challenges of motherhood. There is a need for nutritional support in order to ensure adequate supply of vital vitamins and minerals to keep you and the baby healthy during this important time of your lives.
