Dealing with depression

Dealing with depressionDepression is much more than a simple case of the blues and it needs to be taken seriously. It is a medical condition that affects millions of people and its symptoms can range from mild to severe.  Depression has a significant impact on a person’s quality of life and the consequences can even be life threatening if left untreated.

Depression is a persistent and unshakeable bleak outlook or miserable mood that lasts longer than two weeks. It is characterized by feelings of sadness and hopelessness, as well as loss of interest or pleasure in daily activities.

If you are feeling depressed you may also experience the following:

These symptoms can interfere with your ability to function and cause increased stress in other aspects of your life.  They can cause you to want to cut yourself off from the rest of the world, which will only make it worse. If you are experiencing depression you might be struggling to handle all the facets of your life, causing you to feel ashamed or reluctant to reach out for support.

How you feel and how you act depends to a large degree on how you think. When your mood is low, your tendency will be to view situations through a negative, distorted perspective.  It is vital that you seek out good company and fun activities that have had a history of having a positive effect on your mood in order to combat the negativity.

The worst thing that you can do is ignoring the problem and hoping that it will go away on its own.  If depression is not dealt with then it can quickly start affecting everything that you do.  If you have noticed symptoms in yourself or someone else you care about, then you need to tell someone.  People suffering from depression need medical and professional guidance to help them handle it.  In some cases quality counselling will work and quite often medication is required.  The key is dealing with it, before it is too late.
