Unexplained Increase in Allergies

Although it hasn’t been proven conclusively, many experts believe that eating allergenic foods during pregnancy may help the unborn child’s system to accept these foods later on.

Introduce Foods Early On

Many people think they should avoid introducing foods that are the most allergenic, but experts feel this is contributing to the rise in allergies. Babies should start eating peanuts, eggs, shellfish, nuts, and dairy as early as four months old.

This is the opposite of what was originally suggested by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in 2000. Recent studies confirmed that there was little evidence that delaying their introduction to allergenic foods was preventing allergies from developing later on. It was also proven that children who grew up on farms or had family pets in the home were less likely to develop allergies to pet dander.

Preventing Environmental Allergies

Some airborne substances, like dust mites, can actually trigger allergies or asthma symptoms of allergies or asthma. Keep the humidity in your home below 50% and make sure to wash all of your infant’s bedding in hot water at least once a week. You can also keep your baby safe from dust mites by removing carpeting and using allergen-impermeable pillow covers that securely close with a zipper.

Allergies are an uncomfortable, expensive, and potentially deadly problem that is on the rise in the United States. The best you can do to protect your child is making sure they have the nutrients and vitamins they need for optimal health.
