Smoking and health risks
Health risk due to smoking/passive smoking:
Risk of unborn babies with smoking mothers:
- Miscarriage and still birth
- Premature birth and low birth weight
- Sudden infant death syndrome
- Complications during birth
Risk of children being around smoking parents:
- Sudden infant death syndrome
- First 18mnth of their lives spent around smoking parents increase respiratory illnesses like wheeze, pneumonia, etc… and they are easily prone to getting colds, coughs, middle ear infections. Also their lungs show a reduced ability to function and slower growth.
- Asthma and increased asthma attacks
- Increased risk of meningococcal disease, which can sometimes cause death or disability
Risk of partners around smoking partners:
- Increase risk of heart disease
- Long-term exposure leads to narrowing of arteries
- Makes the blood stickier so it is likely to clot
- Long-term exposure leads to higher risk of developing lung cancer, other cancers and stroke
It is estimated that in Australia, in the financial year 2004–05, 113 adults and 28 infants died from diseases caused by secondhand smoke in the home
