Home Remedies that Help with the Common Cold

Home remedies for common coldSore throat, stuffy nose, dry cough, fever, itchy eyes, muscle aches, and sleepless nights are hard to deal with when there are so many more important things that need your attention. If you’re like most people, you have endured these symptoms season after season with little relief. Although many people spend billions of dollars each year on doctor visits and cold remedies (everything from tissues, to cough syrup, and decongestants), there is still no real cure for the common cold. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to make your recovery easier. This article will cover some of the well-known and lessen known home remedies that will make this cold season more bearable.

Drinking plenty of fluids will help thin the mucus and keep it flowing freely. Fluids make it easier for the body to expel, along with the viral particles that are trapped within it. Water and other liquids will also combat dehydration. Try to drink at least eight ounces of fluid every two hours when you are not feeling well.

Vitamin C can help boost the immune system and reduce the length and severity of symptoms. But to reap the benefits, you need to consumer a significant amount.  Studies show that you need to take upward of 1,000 mg to 3,000 mg for it to help combat your cold symptoms. In the short term, experts believe that such a high amount of Vitamin C is not harmful, but taking too much for too long can cause severe diarrhea. Before loading up on vitamin C, check with your doctor.

Garlic is one of the more popular home cures for colds. Many cultures rely on a home remedy for the cold that involves garlic in some way, whether it is a chicken soup made with lots of garlic, a hot beverage made with crushed garlic or if it just involves eating raw garlic.

Honey is another great remedy that works by coating and soothing an irritated throat.  Honey has antioxidant and antibacterial effects that can speed up your recovery time and dark-colored honey is particularly high in antioxidants.

Hot Peppers and spicy foods are notorious for making your nose run and your eyes water. The hot stuff in peppers called capsaicin is believed to effectively clear up mucus and ease that stuffy nose.

Chicken soup does help alleviate cold symptoms. Science has confirmed that this old wives tale is true. It’s one of the most beneficial hot fluids you can consume when you have a cold. Scientists believe it’s the fumes in the soup that release the mucus in your nose and help your body better fight against its viral invaders. Chicken thins your mucus and the soup provides your body with easily absorbed nutrients.

A cup of hot tea with honey or garlic does the same trick as chicken soup. It will loosen up your nasal passages and makes your stuffy nose feel better. It is often suggested that you should drink tea with spices and herbs that contain aromatic oils with antiviral properties. You can also try tea with ginger, mint, thyme, bee balm, lemon balm, onions, or mustard.

Try these simple remedies and hopefully you will be feeling better in no time, so you can enjoy a productive and symptom-free day.
