What do you need to know about Menopause?

Menopause is a natural event that happen to every single women between the age of 45-55. It marks the end of the reproductive years. We can’t define the exact age of menopause as it depends on each individual. Menopause is confirmed when a woman has missed her periods for 12 consecutive months.

Physical signs of menopause begin many years before the final menstrual period. The transition phase can last 6 years or more, and by definition, ends 1 year after the final menstrual period. It is important to know that each woman’s experience is  individual. Some women may experience few or no symptoms, while others experience multiple physical and psychological symptoms. The extent and severity of symptoms varies significantly among women.

These symptoms are as follows:

  1. Irregular menstrual periods
  2. Abnormal bleeding
  3. Hot flashes/Night sweats
  4. Fatigue
  5. Aches and pains
  6. Headache
  7. Irritability
  8. Trouble focusing
  9. Sleep disturbances
  10. Mood swings

As you approach menopause, the production of hormones  by the ovaries starts to slow down. Hormone levels tend to fluctuate up and down. After menopause the decrease in female hormones may lead to thinning of the bones (osteoporosis) and an increased risk of fractures.  Also for some, an increase in the risk of heart attack and heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke.

It seems certain types of medications and foods or food additives can cause hot flashes. And certain people who are under stress or having an anxiety or panic attack can also have hot flashes.
