When the blood and the tissues are discharged from the vagina of the women as the part of the monthly menstrual cycle it is known as menstruation. In common terms it is also known as period or menstrual period.  The menstruation generally starts between the age of 8 to 16 years and the periods last from about 3 to 5 days.

The most primary sign of the menstruation is the bleeding from the vagina but other signs like mood swings, headache, fatigue, irritability, cramping, sore breasts, food cravings and cramping may also be experienced by some women.

The woman generally gets the PMS one or may be two weeks before the starting of the menstrual periods.  Women of any age who has menstruation may get affected by the PMS.  Medical attention and care should be taken if the lifestyle is disrupted due to the symptoms of the menstruation.

There are various causes that can affect the menstrual periods of the women and these should be taken care of.  The imbalance in the hormones can lead to problems like depression, hair loss, fatigue and allergies.  Too much exercise also affects the periods as the body fat is lowered. Stress is also one of the reason affecting the periods.
