Simple Tips for Improving your Heart Health

Improving Heart HealthThere is nothing more critical to your health than your heart. Your heart is the center of your cardiovascular system and it is vital to almost every aspect of your health. Your heart handles everything from the delivery of oxygen to the success of your immune system.  You literally cannot live without it. So, shouldn’t you be doing everything you can to support all the hard work your heart is doing to keep you alive?

Here are some simple tips for improving your heart health:

Eat more fruits and vegetables!

Fruits and vegetables are an important part of improving your overall heart health. They are high in vitamins, minerals andfibre, plus they are low in fat and calories. Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables may help you control your weight, manage your blood pressure, and prevent cardiovascular disease.

Eat more fish!

The main benefit of eating more fish is the omega-3 fatty acids they contain. Omega-3 fatty acids are an unsaturated fatty acid that reduces inflammation throughout your body. Inflammation in the body can damage your blood vessels and lead to heart disease. Omega-3 fatty acids also decrease triglycerides, lower blood pressure, reduce blood clotting, enhance your immune system, and improve symptoms associated with arthritis.

Reduce your fat intake!

Although you should reduce your fat intake, fats are an important part of a healthy balanced diet and you should not exclude them completely. Instead of cutting all fats from your diet, make sure that you eat less saturated and trans-fats and replace them with polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats.

Reduce your salt intake!

Salt can reduce blood flow to the heart and cause your blood pressure to rise. Poor circulation and high blood pressure will increase your risk for heart disease and stroke. Fortunately, reducing your salt intake can reverse the affect.

Reduce stress!

Too much stress can actually increase your risk of heart disease. High levels of stress or prolonged stress can cause high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, and be more prone to blockages in their arteries.

Regular exercise!

An active lifestyle is one of the most powerful ways for you to improve your heart health. Exercise strengthens your heart and cardiovascular system, improves your circulation, and lowers your blood pressure. It also helps your body learn how to use oxygen more efficiently.

Get your blood pressure and cholesterol levels checked!

If there is a problem with your heart, early detection is the key to survival. All it takes is a regular checkup to ensure that your blood pressure and cholesterol levels are where they should be.

Quit smoking!

It probably goes without saying, but smoking will have a tremendously negative affect on your heart health.  The chemicals in cigarettes damage the walls of the arteries around your heart. This causes the buildup of plaque that can harden and narrow your arteries. Smoking can also cause the plaque to burst and block the artery, resulting in a heart attack. The nicotine in cigarettes also stimulates the release of chemicals that may raise your blood pressure.

It is not easy to change your life, but there is no greater reason than having a healthy heart to inspire you to live a healthier lifestyle!
