What is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate?

What is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate?Although it is still being used in many common products, there are some scary reports about Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate (SLES). Reputable Institutions like the Journal of the American College of Toxicology have stated that these chemicals have a degenerative effect on cell membranes. They are also rumoured to be carcinogens, although it is not recognized as a carcinogen, there is ample evidence to support the rumours.

Harmful to Your Skin, Eyes, & Organs

SLS and SLES are known skin irritants that have corrosive properties, yet they are found in many products you use on your skin. It is found in soaps, moisturizes, body washes, shave creams, sunscreen, bubble-baths, and shampoos. It was also prove to be an eye irritant and cause cataracts in adults.

It is a surprising ingredient to find on the label of your mouthwash and toothpaste when you consider the fact that SLS and SLES are also found in engine degreasers and industrial soaps because of their powerful cleaning and corrosive properties. There was even a study at the University of Georgia Medicine that showed SLS has the ability to permeate liver, eyes, heart, and brain tissue.

Harmful to the Environment

These potentially damaging chemicals are found in cosmetics, laundry detergent, and dish soap. SLS and SLES are commonly used as herbicides and pesticides. Producers of SLS recently petitioned to have it listed as an approved pesticide for use in organic farming.  Fortunately the application was not accepted because the manufacturing process pollutes the air and disposing of it pollutes the groundwater. SLS and SLES also emit toxic fumes like Sulfur Oxide and Toxic Sodium Oxides when heated.

Although it has not been proven to be a carcinogen, it is as deadly to humans as it is to the environment. Toxic solvents, such as carcinogenic nitrates are used in the manufacturing of SLS and traces of these nitrates may remain inside the product. SLS and SLES should be taken off the market, but it is becoming increasingly hard to regulate. There are over 150 different names that it is sold under, so it is hard to know whether or not the product actually contains SLS and SLES.

Alternatives to SLS and SLES

You don’t have to use or ingest products that contain SLS or SLES. There are great alternatives that are proven to be safe. For example, USANA makes a Natural Whitening Toothpaste that is completely free from these destructive chemicals. It is made with no artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners, or fluoride. It is completely natural, so you can feel comfortable using it in your mouth.

In today’s chemical and processed consumer market, it is essential that health conscientious consumers pay attention to not only what they ingest internally, but also what they apply on their skin. Natural products may cost a little more, but your health is worth it.
