Why SupplementI was reading an article that intrigued me. When people are healthy, they do not worry about what they eat and how their life style is leading them toward the path of destruction. Once they hit the dead end, with either a terminal illness or chronic disease, then they turn around  and try to head toward the better path.

As we discussed in older posts many chronic medical conditions are not immediate, rather they develop  gradually over years of poor diet, lack of exercise and exposure to environmental toxins.

We define average health, as rarely have to visit a doctor or getting an ‘all clear’ during our annual check ups. But optimal health is defined as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease.

Although Australians and New Zealanders experience highest life expectancies, they are not necessarily living healthier. Chronic diseases are rising and many are living with long-term health conditions that are common causes of disability and reduced quality of life.

When we live longer, healthy ageing is a top priority. Determining state of health and susceptibility to disease depend on good nutrition. The science of nutritional medicine identifies dietary choices and supplements likely to benefit most people.

Fast paced lifestyle, work, stress and easy access to fast food make it almost impossible t ensure a daily intake of all the nutrients necessary for a healthy mind and body.

Studies show that an adequate amount of nutrients  are required for the immune system to function efficiently. Supplementation with selected vitamins and minerals can enhance the immune system by supporting the body’s natural defenses on both a structural and cellular level

Research Outcomes:

Data from the National Health Survey(2009) showed that less than 10% of Australians aged 15yrs and over consumed the recommend servings of vegetables every day; and just over 50% usually consumed recommended servings of fruits every day. Poor diet is the leading cause of death in New Zealand, and contributed to an estimated 8500 deaths in 1977.

In 2002, a scientific review published in JAMA indicated that less than optimal intake of some vitamins is a risk factor for chronic diseases and common in the general population, especially the elderly. Most people do not consume an optimal amount of vitamins by diet alone. Increasing evidence suggests that it appears prudent for all adults to take vitamin supplements.
