Terrific tips to help you quit smoking

Quitting SmokingQuitting smoking is no easy feat. Nicotine causes chemical and biological changes to the brain. Although it is less dramatic than heroin or cocaine, the strength of the addiction to cigarettes can be just as powerful. Which means quitting smoking can be just as challenging as overcoming a major drug addiction.

The first key to success is having the right attitude. You should quit because you want to quit, you are tired of being a smoker, and you realize it is time for a change. Make a list of all the reasons you don’t want to smoke and how your life will be better off once you quit. For example, you won’t be stuck outside in the cold every lunch break freezing your fingers off. Write down all the damaging effects it is having on your health and all of the wonderful physical activities you will be able to do once you quit.

If you feel confident you can handle it, many people have found success quitting “cold turkey.”  Start by setting a firm “quit” date and then prepare yourself along the way by starting to adjust your habits. If you usually smoke in the car, try to go for one long car ride without smoking. Chew gum, snack on carrot sticks, or sing in the car instead. This way you don’t have to break the habit all at once, you can ease into it. Take the time leading up to your quit date to mentally prepare yourself and get excited about the major life improvement you are about to make.

You can use the physical activities you want to do in the future as motivators. I quit while training to walk a marathon and ended up being able to run a portion of it. I knew I would never reach my goal as a smoker and my goal became more important to me than my filthy, long-destroying habit.

Another popular and effective tip for quitting smoking is chewing on nicotine or even regular gum. Sometimes all it takes is having something in your mouth as a distraction. Another tip is eating raw vegetables or fruit. If you usually take a smoke break at work, you can take an apple break instead. Replacing the bad habit with new healthy habits and it will make it a lot easier to handle.

Vapor cigarettes are the latest breakthrough for quitting smoking, although I haven’t personally tried them myself (they weren’t around when I quit). You will still have the habit, but they are not harmful and they don’t have many of the same drawbacks as smoking cigarettes.

There are many people who believe acupuncture can help you overcome an addiction. If you currently see an acupuncturist for other ailments or if you have always been curious to try it, then make an appointment and see if it works for you. There is no harm in trying and if you are struggling with your attempt to quit, it could make it a lot more bearable.

Quitting smoking is a commitment that you need to want to make to yourself. Focus on all the reasons you want to quit, set a date, make healthy adjustments to your habits, and stay positive. You are about to make a huge improvement to your life that you will never regret!
