Vitamin B12 May Help Prevent Brain Shrinkage

Brain shrinkage is something that happens with aging and has been linked with Alzheimer’s dementia. A study published in the journal Neurology reported an association between decreased levels of vitamin B12 and a decline in brain volume. Comparison of MRI images on 107 participants obtained at the beginning of the study and five years later found a greater amount of brain volume loss among participants with a low vitamin B12 level. Subjects whose B12 levels were among the lowest one-third of participants had a six times greater risk of increased brain volume loss than those whose levels were in the top two-thirds.

The researchers concluded that increasing vitamin B12 intake, especially among the elderly, may help reverse this brain loss. This is just another reason why you should be taking vitamin B12 in supplementation – Dr Ray Strand
