Folic Acid Improves Blood Flow

One of the problems that is increasing in our societies is hardening of the arteries of the extremities (peripheral artery disease). This creates a problem referred to as intermittent claudication where the muscles of the legs do not get enough blood supply when walking for some distance. This causes significant cramping and disability.

A study reported in the British Journal of Surgery (2009 Sep;96(9):990-8) that supplementing these kinds of patients with folic acid had significant health benefits. In a double-blind clinical trial, 133 patients with peripheral artery disease received just 400 mcg of folic acid in two different forms. They were compared to patients who received a placebo pill. Blood folate levels increased and homocysteine levels decreased in the groups supplementing with folic acid. Peripheral blood flow was also significantly improved when compared to the placebo group. The researchers concluded that supplementing with folic acid is a safe and effective way to increase blood flow in patients with hardening of the arteries- Dr Ray Strand

Aw, this was an incredibly nice post. Spending some
time and actual effort to produce a superb article…
but what can I say… I put things off a whole lot and
don’t seem to get nearly anything done.
